Happy Birthday, Ruth!

This was a little project for March at my Scrappy Club.  And I actually completed it, in March!  (It’s hanging in my entry way.  If you’d like to have it, you’ll need to come and get it.  :) )

Ideas needed

My friend Liis just returned from a trip to Panama.  She brought me this adorable little appliqué square made by the Kuna Indians.

I think it will finish to 6.5”, and I’m imagining surrounding it with a series of pieced borders, probably involving quite a few triangles and solid black and green fabrics.  But that won’t be happening for a while.

 

 

 

 

 

She also brought back some mola pieces.  She said she was going to turn under the edges and stitch them onto some purchased cushions to use in her living room.  I was horrified and demanded she turn them over to me – I’m sure I can construct cushions that will work better than anything she can find in WalMart!! 

Her living room is blues and greens.  If I remember correctly, the colours are soft, sort of batik-y.  So these are going to be nice bright accents!  She thought white might work for the borders.  What do you think?  I think the finished sizes will be about 13” by 16” or so.  Maybe two inch borders?  Perhaps a line of colour in the border? or not?  Finish the edge with a bright binding that looks like piping?  Figure out how to make and apply a real piping for the edges? 

I tried laying them on black, and that is too much. Cream – just looked dirty.   I might have a piece of a fairly heavy woven cotton downstairs that is about the same white as in the red piece.  (The fabric is the leftovers from what I used for my ironing board cover.)  If I try to match the blues and greens in the pieces I might have trouble finding the right colours.

Also, I’ll need to construct the pillow forms to go inside the covers – probably utility fabric of some kind filled with polyester fibrefill.  I don’t want them too fat because the design part needs to remain fairly flat to show off to good advantage.  How do I make them “not fat” without them being too limp?
